Uncovering Fats
Discussion Actions
The conversation revolving around fats and their influence no health and appearance has been circulating in and out of our media for the past 40 years. It’s a conversation I’ve been hesitant to chime in on in for many reasons, one being that the conversation seems to wind all over the place, bouncing back and forth from science to commonsense, from government to media all the way to moral implications, never landing on a trustworthy conclusion… so goes the ever uncovering terrain of health and food! However, as my interest has been turned onto the health of consciousness I find that it is time to contribute to the direction of its unfolding.
The first step of this journey is to get clear on what’s already known or unknown, myth or truth, etc. I’ve started researching this topic and compiling it to share with you, (which I look forward to doing soon!), but in the mean time I want to reach out and start generating some conversation and awareness around the conditionings we have when it comes to consuming fats. I think each generation and gender has a different flavor of this “fat conditioning” and yet the message seems to be clear across the board: “fat is bad.” This message quickly mutated from information that could be used to promote wholeness and well being to information that fuels our superficial relationship with food. Of course this isn’t true for everyone, but as I look down the grocery aisles, shelves loaded with non-fat or low-fat alternative “foods,” the sentiments of “fat is bad” still seem to be lingering.
Looking forward to “hearing” your thoughts/experience on this topic…
Cheers,
Amber
As I read this I realize I had two very strong strains of conflicting conditioning from my family of origin. The thinking goes like this: Fat is bad because it is what makes us fat, and being fat is very very bad. Fat is what makes eating enjoyable and enjoying eating is what makes life worth living. So fat is bad, but life is not worth living without it. You can be healthy, or you can have fun. But not both. How’s that for twisted?
Looking forward to your posts on this.
