GF Fast Food

Discussion Actions

I don’t recommend your typical fast food. Most of it really is toxic. And truly its just as easy to throw some veggies, GF crackers and an apple in a bag and pack it with you. But sometimes we are in a pinch or are traveling and there are definitely better fast foods choices out there.

Taco Del Mar is a nice choice if you live near one. They have veggie and non-veg options that are GF. The GF menu is listed here:

Often times I just get a bowl with beans and their tasty cabbage and salsa on top.

Remember that if you order the corn tortillas, they should wrap them in paper before steaming in the steamer that has had flour tortillas as well.

Here are some other ideas for creating your own “fast food”

1.Chopped veggie sticks with hummus (if you buy the hummus then this meal takes less than 5 minutes! Get creative and vary the types of veggies you use. I LOVE sweet snap peas and red bell pepper strips!

2. little tins of smoked oysters or sardines with GF crackers. You can get fancy with these and add goat cheese or olives on top.

3. Smoked salmon. This usually can be out of the fridge safely for many hours so its my staple fast food when I travel.

4. Fruit. Already beautiful packaged and ready to eat. Apples, pears, oranges, satsumas, grapes…

5. Sliced apple with a nut butter of your choice. Try the new Sunflower butter that I have seen out in the stores for a tasty twist! Or try banana slathered in nut butter.

6. Fast food for work: I always keep a few cans of GF soup at work. If I had not time that AM to pack lunch, I know I’m covered.

7. Find a good GF protein powder and keep a little bit with you in your purse or car. I can’t tell you how many times I have been in a situation where there was no GF food and I was hungry… I knew I had my protein powder and it was perfectly sustaining! My favorite ( and i have tried A LOT) is LifeTimes Life’s Basics Green plant based Protein Powder http://www.lifetimevitamins.com/products/lifetime_plantprotein.html

8. Raw nuts and dried fruit. This is another thing that I always keep on hand. You can’t beat a delicious raw cashew and a dried fig or apricot. Yum!

9. If you eat dairy you can’t beat cheese and crackers :). Trader Joes has a nice selection of cheeses, some GF crackers, and also this Turkey Kolbosa (sp?) Sausage that is GF. Throw in some veggie sticks and you have a wonderful meal in 5 minutes.

10. Celery with almond butter inside. Ah yes, this brings back memories from childhood :)

These are excellent fast foods, Tif! Another one I love is jicama sticks with guacamole. Jicama is a white-ish, watery root vegetable that’s popular in Mexico and Indonesia. It’s often eaten with a squeeze of lime and a pinch of chili powder for kick, and I’ve found that dipping it in guacamole gives it a bit more “staying power.” Thanks for the ideas!
