Goji Berries - a nightshade ?!?!
Discussion Actions
I learned today that goji berries are considered part of the nightshade family. I had no idea… I didn’t want to believe it at first, but it would help explain a reaction I had during the elimination diet. Anybody have any insight to share?
Curious…

Hey Tiffany… thanks for responding. I am not sure about the solinie content or even where one would find such information…if you do find out anything more definitive, please share. For the time being, I think I’ll just steer clear, until my body tells me otherwise.
Since you asked about my reaction… Interestingly, my experience with goji berries came immediately after reintroducing nightshades to my diet and having a strong reaction. After the reaction (to potato and tomato), I kept to foods that I knew my body could handle for a few days. On the third day of re-balancing my diet, I ate some goji berries (assuming they were okay – after all, they are a ‘berry’) while at a weekend retreat. Didn’t really think anything of it but felt a little off that evening and by the next afternoon felt absolutely horrible… headache, nausea, burning sensation in my GI tract, and a period later in the day when my limbs felt heavy and ‘lifeless’ (for lack of a better way of explaining it). I had no energy… was a challenge to stay standing let alone to do anything. I managed, with great determination, to cook something simple for dinner. My housemate, noticing I was not myself, graciously offered to clean up for me. My concentration and emotional state went for a six too… not fun at all! It was actually this particular reaction I was referring to in a previous post, which prompted me to make the appointment with the Naturpoath.
And the path of shared discovery continues…

That is very interesting about the gogi berry rx. It does sound like the system is hyper-reactive right now. I would suggest staying off the nightshades for 4 to six month completely.
Have you ever tried NAET?

This is very interesting, I had never heard that gogi berries were nightshades. I’ve suspected myself of being reactive to gogis and find that I feel drowsy and heavy after I eat them. I’ve steered clear of them for a while now. I haven’t noticed a reaction to nightshades in general but may try eliminating and reintroducing to be sure. Thanks for sharing Emily!
Hi Emily!! You know, I had heard rumor that that was the case, but did not check it out first hand. I wonder how high the solinie content is..? That is the compound that can cause achy joints.
What was your reaction?
