Can we eat to starve cancer?

Discussion Actions

Hi everyone,

I came across this Ted talk that I encourage you all to watch.  It’s a fascinating presentation by Dr. William Li on how cancer can be medically treated with  anti-angiogenesis (starving the blood vessels that feed the tumors).  Dr. Li then takes us one step further to see how we can avoid developing these extra tumor feeding blood vessels in the first place.  He and his research team have found is that the answer is in the foods and spices we eat and teas we drink.

One aspect of his presentation that I’ve found so compelling is that he’s looking at diet from the perspective of what CAN we eat that will starve out cancer, not what NOT to eat.  As subtle as this is, I think it’s actually quite a profound shift in approaching diet- especially a medical diet.  As many of us have probably found by now, when we embrace an anti diet (a diet of don’t eats) eating becomes a much different experience than when we engage with a more consciously selected diet.  The difference between these two perspectives could mean everything in terms of setting one’s self up for success.

Anti-Angiogensis also appears to be a solution to combating obesity, as lipid (fat) also requires these extra blood vessels to grow and sustain.

I really appreciate the differentiation that you make between the “what we can” and “what we can’t” eat diets. I have found this so true in my own life and also when I am giving dietary advice to patients. There is such an abundance of great, healthy foods out there for us! Its a shame when we get caught up in the few that we are restricted from eating.
