Eating out Delimma!

Eating out can be tricky when you're trying to maintain a gluten free and health conscious diet. So.. that brings us to our eating out dilemma! In this "dinner dilemma" find out what and how to order when eating out in Mexican and Italian places.

Ideas on what you can order when eating out at Mexican restaurants:

Sides of beans and rice, with chopped veggies.  Corn tortillas are generally safe, but if you are extremely sensitive the steamers can cause cross contamination so you may want to bring your own or ask them not to steam them.

Fajitas are great, but usually marinated in soy sauce, so you can ask them not to marinate them and also ask them not to “splash,” which is a  squirt, usually of soy sauce, they put over top of veggies before they serve them (that is what creates the sizzle sound!).

Taco salads are great, just not in the fried tortilla bowl. Chips and salsa are generally ok, but there may be cross-contamination issue if they fry in a multi-use frier.

When eating out Italian…

When it comes to Italian foods we typically think of pasta and pizza, but as we’ve ventured into the Tuscan hills of Italy, we’ve found there is a whole other world of Italian dishes that are pasta free.

You can order fish, sautéed or steamed veggies, salads topped with olive oil and salt & pepper, meats, brochette but without the bread- chopped onions, tomatoes, olives (usually this is served over a baguette, but you can ask for it on top of greens!)

Calamari is usually fried and breaded, but you can ask if it is not already pre-breaded to have it sautéed in olive oil and lemon, or in red tomato sauce. This is my fav!

White beans dishes are also really delicious and very popular in Italy.

Spanish Tapas restaurants are great as most of the dishes are naturally gluten free
